Play & Sing Day
Every year, we welcome over 100 musicians to play and sing with Spires as we learn a work from scratch in just one day. We rehearse during the morning and afternoon and then, under the guidance of Chorus Director Jack Lovell, both the Orchestra and Chorus come together in an informal performance for our friends and family. We've previously tackled works including Brahms' A German Requiem, Handel's Messiah and Schubert's Mass in Ab.

Join the Chorus or Orchestra
Spires Philharmonic Chorus is about 50 strong and performs classical choral repertoire to a high standard. At least twice a year, in April and November/December, the chorus combines with our orchestra to perform a major choral/orchestral work. Our April concerts are led by our musical director, Colin Touchin. All other concerts are lead by our chorus director, and orchestra conductor/manager, Jack Lovell.
In the summer, we hold a popular picnic performance for chorus and orchestra members. We have growing international links with other musicians. In 2018, after performing at Coventry Cathedral with the Lufthansa chorus, we organised a chorus tour to Frankfurt and sang Brahms’ German Requiem with the Lufthansa chorus and orchestra conducted by Colin Touchin. In June 2019, the Dresden Neuer Chor will sing with our chorus and orchestra at Coventry Cathedral, to celebrate 60 years of friendship between the twinned cities of Coventry and Dresden.
Rehearsals for the Spires Philharmonic Chorus are arranged on different days of the week to allow members to sing in other local choirs as well. Rehearsals run from 7:00 to 9:15pm, including a refreshment break. There are usually ten rehearsals for each concert and we ask members not to miss more than three.
Rehearsals for the Spires Philharmonic Orchestra are usually in the few weeks before the concert with three to five rehearsals, repertoire depending. We welcome applications from members of every section of the orchestra but particularly strings and brass.
New members are always very welcome and are invited to attend rehearsals for few weeks to try us out. There is not usually a need to audition and after a few rehearsals you will be invited to join on a more permanent basis. For the Chorus an ability to read music is required and you are expected to undertake preparation outside rehearsals. For the Orchestra you will be expected to be an accomplished orchestral player performing to a high standard and committed to attending the reduced rehearsal schedule.
If you would like to join us please contact our chorus manager, Kathryn Hardy or orchestra manager, Jack Lovell using the form below.
