Vacancy: Chorus Director

Spires Philharmonic Chorus and Orchestra, based in Coventry, seeks a versatile Chorus Director with a detailed understanding of vocal technique to support our Artistic Director, Jack Lovell-Huckle and rehearse our chorus of 50 in the autumn and spring each year.

 

Spires Philharmonic Chorus meets on Wednesday evenings and rehearses for c.10 sessions before each concert. There are at least two concerts a year, as well as a Play and Sing Day each January and an Orchestra Play Day each September.

 

Our repertoires are varied and we aim to be innovative within the classical music tradition. For examples of our range of music over the past 20 years, please see Past Concerts.


The Chorus Director will rehearse the Chorus for c.8 sessions per concert with the support of an experienced accompanist. Collaborative working with the Artistic Director is essential. The Chorus Director will be supported by an experienced management team. JOB DESCRIPTION:
1. Consult and collaborate with the Spires Music Artistic Director on the interpretation of chosen repertoires for the chorus.
2. Lead and conduct rehearsals of the chorus under the guidance of the Artistic Director and with the support and a piano accompanist.
3. Work with singers to develop their vocal techniques for a given the repertoire.
4. Remuneration will be by negotiation and in line with experience.


PERSON SPECIFICATION:
1. Musical qualifications: Vocal Diploma and/or Music Degree
2. Musical experience:
- A strong background in vocal work and technique.
- A demonstrated experience of teaching vocal technique to singers of varying levels of experience.
- Experience of conducting vocal ensembles.
3. Demonstrated ability to work with others.
4. Availability:
- This is a seasonal position with most work in the autumn and spring. The Chorus Director will run weekly chorus rehearsals for about eight weeks prior to a concert – one set between September-November and a second set January to April. (There are usually ten chorus rehearsals before each concert and the Artistic Director will usually manage the last two and conduct the concert.) Some substitution is possible but continuity is important. Chorus rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings, 7:15-9:45pm. At the URC Baginton Rd, Baginton Rd, Coventry, CV3 6FP.
- The Chorus Director must be available to attend some on-line Management Group meetings and liaise with the Artistic Director separately as needed.
