About The Event

On 24 September, Spires Philharmonic Orchestra will be hosting a Play Day exploring Shostakovich's masterpiece, his Symphony No. 5.

The orchestra will be led by our professional leader, Alistair Kennedy and conducted by Spires Chorus Director and current CBSO Assistant Conductor, Jack Lovell-Huckle. Spires Philharmonic Orchestra is made up from local professional, semi-professional and amateur players from across the West and East Midlands, specialising in accompanying large scale choral repertoire, working regularly with Spires Philharmonic Chorus at prestigious venues across Coventry, including Coventry Cathedral. However, 24 September will be all about the orchestra and we are keen to hear from you if you are interested in joining us for what promises to be an exhilarating day of music making.

Registration is from 9:30am, rehearsals starting at 10am. The day will end with an informal run through at 4:30pm and we welcome anyone to come and be our audience, free of charge. Original music will be provided on the day and practice parts can be provided in advance. Tea/Coffee will be available during regular breaks and there is ample free parking at the venue. All we ask is that you bring a music stand and recommend that you bring some lunch. The venue is United Reformed Church, 83 Baginton Rd, Coventry, CV3 6FP.

We currently have a few remaining vacancies and are particularly keen to hear from people who play violin, viola, double bass, trombone, percussion, timpani and harp, but would welcome interest from anyone who might like to join us. Although no formal grades are required we would expect participants to be comfortable playing music of this level, at least grade 5 and above would be desirable.

People who play any of the above mentioned instruments may apply directly to attend the day at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/spiresmusic. For those not mentioned please do not hesitate to email us at spiresphilharmonic@gmail.com as there may still be space.
